Natural Paint and Dye Workshops

Plant Dyes and Lake Pigments:
This workshop focuses on harvesting and processing plants to make dyes and pigments, and modifying the pH to enhance colors. We will make pastels with our pigments and draw during the remaining class time. Participants can take home their pastels, dyes and drawings. Materials are included.

Design Your Color Garden:
Participants will have the opportunity to develop a design for their color garden for dyes and pigments. During the class we will review planting, cultivation, harvesting and sustainable garden care. Materials are included.

Watercolors and Pigments:
Join us for a fun and creative watercolor workshop. We will be processing pigments and making our own watercolors, with extra time for painting. Participants can take home their watercolor paint palettes. Materials are included.

Making & Painting with Natural Encaustic Paints
Encaustics are a wonderfully forgiving and fun medium with lots of opportunity for creative applications. They can be applied in multiple layers, fused, polished, carved, engraved, etched and filled. This class is an opportunity not to be missed. We will be processing natural pigments to mix into our beeswax paints. Then we will review techniques and safety before painting on wood panels with our encaustics. Participants can take home their encaustic paints and painted panels. Materials are included.

Natural Plant Dyes
This is key information for naturally dyeing your own wool and fabrics, as well as foundational information for processing natural pigments. Plan to take notes as we review plant species and parts used for making beautiful natural dyes. We will have a hands on experience with mordanting and modifying dye batches of 5 different plants. Participants can bring jars to take home some of the natural dyes prepared. Materials are included.
